RE "No amount of ongoing management and continual improvements is going to be able to control the impact and draw/drain of the larger market of networks. It can fight against it, but the fact is people are fickle and will move on."

You're on target here. Thinking that tactical moves can be used for a continuing uber-attractor effect on people is foolhardy. Yes, people are fickle. But I am also convinced that there are two other dynamics that are in play in the community which are going impact it's ebb and flow: (1) the compelling nature of the interest that caused the community to form, (2) the iterations and permutations of sub-communities (which you mention) that grow from the taproot of the original community. These are both generative and give life to the people and context from which the community originally rose. In my mind, a good thing overall.

Re: social site fatigue....

I think people have burnout from pointlessness. The gee-whiz phase of this is over.

If you had a baby and it stayed tiny and required you to wake up in the middle of the night and change its diapers for 40 years, you'd get kinda tired of it.

This is true for social stuff, we've seen it be cute. Now we want it to go get a job.
