here's more info on eyebeam - http://eyebeam.org/ It is a non-profit. Those of us who made the shade are artists. We work on the OpenLab and you can read about that on the site. We're sort of in the middle of a redesign, so I apologize for the 404 and the current site.

Dear Nancy,
Another one of your great and thought provoking ones. Thanks. The other day when I proposed to do a brown-bag seminar about Net-Map (my own "bright idea shade") at the Interamerican Development Bank, even though I don't speak Spanish and it's unlikely that I'll ever consult for them, my contact asked me "What's in it for you?"

Which links to the question you pose: Why would a for-profit actor give away an idea for free instead of selling it? In my case I think its a combination of profit and not-for-profit motivations. But to look at the profit side of things: I'd much rather be part of something big than something small. If I hold onto my ideas, they will never grow beyond the size of what I can manage - and will never be developed beyond the thoughts that fit into my brain. If I want to see a reflection of my ideas in the world, I have to let them go and do something without me controlling every step.
