Jay, thing have changed in the past two years for sure. I wish the technology would continue to improve. I tried http://www.meetingburner.com this week and was happy with my first trial. Why? Because it was simple, it worked and there seems to be attention to the meeting participant needs (instead of the convenor or manager.) I'm looking forward to playing with it more. Thanks also for the link. A lot of people ask me where to keep up with the latest on synchronous meeting tools. We need to keep up on the practices too. A bad meeting is still a bad meeting, regardless of the platform, eh?

Steve, you are spot on thinking about the need to define the interaction needed.

Michael, right now I'd be crippled if I did not have Skype for my business!

Joe Pringle of ForumOne pointed out this review site for webmeeting tools --> http://www.onlinemeetingreviews.com/reviews/ I have not had a chance to read yet, but it might be a useful resource.

Jessica Lipnack's blog is another good virtual team/meeting resource - the latest post is really interesting on virtual disagreement resolution http://endlessknots.netage.com/endlessknots/2009/04/have-a-disagreement-resolve-it-virtually.html

I also love f2f, but with carbon emissions of flying roughly being equivalent to the same mileage in a car and the real solar forcing being closer to 2 to 2.5x that level, other solutions are required.

Most of my work is with stable workgroups who have built up a mix of tools that work. What I'm not happy with are general meeting or conference tools -- I was doing a presentation to about 200 people in three locations the other day and it was a disaster. About half of my alloted hour was spent getting things working on their end - mostly communications between two of their locations.

On the other hand I've been doing iChat seminars for about a year with some folks in Europe

There is a real need to define exactly what forms of interaction are required in a meeting, conference or workgroup and then sort out the tool(s) required. Finally there needs to be testing by representatives of all parties. Some people get this right and others need a lot of help.

One of my clients spends time thinking about when f2f is required and tries to optimize those interactions. They want to cut flying by about 70%, but are spending a lot of energy making sure real f2f time is well spent.

We've also used Skype for recruitment interviews (someone we hired from New Zealand - very different dynamic to face-to-face interviewing and delivering training. Utterly invaluable.
