Virginia, thanks for sharing the story from your daughter. It is a useful example of choosing a tool to match the need in a quite specific way. The inherent linearity and security of SP may have specific value in the context you noted. It is rarely useful in a networked context. Right on!

My daughter uses a new version of SP for her school. Many of the problems you bring up are still there, especially compatibility issues. Also, you are limited in the browsers you can use (internet explorer works the best) and many of the MAC users can't access SP.

There is one feature they have included, which is a personal space where an individual can upload their notes, etc... There is also a "community" tool which is supposed to work like facebook. However, we have had trouble accessing this and it does seem a bit cumbersome.

I think your comment of "siloed" structure is the most restrictive to community building. This is a good tool if you want to have a linear written record (i.e. timeline) for collaboration. It is my understanding from my daughter's ITS officer that SP is the ITS's dream, especially if security is a factor. But it is harder for educators to use.
