iPad Lust and Clash with Ideology

I have been wanting an iPad for my graphic recording work but I just haven’t given in. (I’m also debating various ebook readers to cut down on paper. I have a book habit.) But I keep getting uncomfortable. George Siemens sums it up for me.

However, for those committed to openness, the iPad forces a clash between technolust and ideology. Perhaps we need a self-help group for people in a state of cognitive dissonance due to the impressive Apple technology, but less impressive stance on openness and end user control.

  1. Nancy, you definitely need to dive in and get an iPad. I’m a change management consultant and soon to be online professor. I use Simple Mind Express to mind map conversations I have with clients after they have done a bit of talking. Their draws drop when they see the mind map instantly appear on the iPad.

Their shoulders go back a bit and they sit up a little higher. Their reaction is that they feel important because you’ve created a high credibility looking model from their thoughts and ideas.

It’s a win-win. The app is free, but the software will cost you to edit online. I just export as jpg’s so I’ve not really felt the need to buy it. You can see more here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simplemind-xpress-mindmapping/id305727658?mt=8

Keep up the good work on online facilitation. Real people are reading you!!

    Best regards,

    1. First, Ron, you made my day when you wrote “Real people are reading you.” I could not wish for anything more. Thank you.

Second…dang, I’m tempted. I may wait for the next generation. Ah, the seduction of technology!

  3. Hi Nancy,

don’t wait, it’ll just get a new camera. And you’ll miss the whole exploration phase :-).

    Best regards,

    Miguel (writing on an iPad).

  4. I too have been grappling with the same question – the lure of paperless drawing has me weak at the knees … the lust of buying/owning/disposing of yet another toxic gadget makes me feel uneasy. Geoff
