Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park

The last time I saw Mt. Desert was in 1969. It impressed me as an 11 year old and it impressed me again. There is something particular about this stretch of coast. As a coast lover, I could be nothing but happy.

The first night we headed in to Bar Harbor on their wonderful free shuttle service. Time for more seafood. My 19 year old son figured out that he loves lobster.

The next morning some of us got up early to catch the first bus to Jordan Pond to walk around the pond. We enjoyed an easy walk and saw not only beaver ponds, but evidence of recent work.

We saw blueberries, but just a few were ripe enough to eat. That made the 6 year old walking with us happy.

The walk, really was an excuse to finish up at the Jordan House to have some of their legendary Jordan House popovers. Man, these are a a delight to see and eat. Crispy on the outside, moist and slightly custardy in the inside with gobs of Vermont butter and raspberry jam. I had mine with a cup of sturdy clam chowder. The butterfat index -- well, we won't discuss that.
