coComment - tracking your comments

I've been waiting for this. Via a Scoble post, I followed the track to (and managed to find an invite to the beta) coComment - clear conversation in the blogosphere. This web based tool uses a little bookmarklet to track the comments you leave on blogs and responses that come in afterwards. The beta product only supports certain blog platforms, but I'm likin' what I see. The instructions were easy. The practice will take a while to get into my head and fingers.

One side note. Clearly I'm not the only one waiting for something like this. Scoble's post nabbed over 130 comments in less than a day about the new app. Great viral PR!

It's a tiny bit slow, or maybe that's my connection - I've only tried it a few times so I'm not complaining about slowness yet. I'm having trouble remembering when to click the bookmarklet and if someone distracts me while I'm commenting I am guaranteed to forget. When it becomes second nature, I'm going to LOVE this.

Unfortunately as I was clicking the bookmarklet for this very comment I got the "sorry this format is not supported" message! Maybe I'm not going to love this?????

Hah, the invitations come back pretty quickly. They say they support blogger comments, but it may not be in this little side window here. This is my first try at a coComment, so let's see how it works. Nah, it says the page I visited is currently not supported. I guess I'll try commenting on my own site! (I bet it is the pop-up used here, though.)

Yeah, I think it is the pop up. I'm going to try resetting my comments out of pop ups to see if it works.

It's the plopup comment window.... and since when did you start moderating comments, Nancy? I've tried cocomment all day and it works great til it hits a comment popup window.

I started moderating today because of the huge influx of DVD spam. They have it formatted so cleverly I can't easily find and delete it. So I resorted to moderation. Bummer, but that's life, eh? Either that or resign myself to being a DVD marketer!

(And yes, it was the pop ups!)

If you use Firefox, you can avoid having to click the bookmarklet every time by using a Greasemonkey script.

Hi Nancy,

Okay, I tried last night using one of the codes left by a commentor on scoble's blog. Didn't work. But, then I just signed up to be notified later and I got an invitation code.

I got it to work - well at least the box that shows my comments on typepad.

Now this comment is my first test ..

which might not work if you're moderating ...

Hm, I wonder if the moderating screws it up. Never thought about that. Let's see what happens.

Yes, I think it does screw it up. :-(

I don't know about moderation. coComment does depend on being able to know what the URL of the posted comment will be and being able to access the address bar of the window, I suppose.

I couldn't get coComment to work for me until I adjusted my browser's security and privacy settings. That has me be more watchful of the little indicator that indicates privacy measures have been taken. For example, in accessing the article where I'm placing this comment, my browser reports blocking six cookies.

They are from haloscan, technorati (thrice), cyber.law.harvard.edu, and furl.net.

So it seems to be a prevalent practice that people who provide us nice little images and goodies for our web pages make use of them to plant cookies on the computer of the people who visit that page. Isn't that nifty. Oh, Blogger did it too, but I have them not be blocked so I can administer even my own blog pages. Thrilling, huh?

I can confirm that moderation does not get in the way.

If you have the comment all ready to go and you click the coComment bookmarklet before clicking "Login and Publish," it all works. That's because even though the comment might not be visible on the site, coComment has determined what it is and what its URL will be.

You can tell that the bookmarklet is ready to capture your comment after you click the bookmarklet. Look for the little coComment symbol down by the submit button, with your coComment name right next to it. Then submit the comment the usual way.

Oh, and don't worry about the message that Blogger throws up about leaving the page and losing your information. You won't leave the page and everything works.

Well, this morning I had problems with blogger blogs, but it has gone away. I've gotten it to work and am going to check out the greasemonkey script thingy.

There's a post on the coComment Team Blog announcing that they've hit their first speed bump and have stopped giving out further invitations until they address some performance and scaling issues. I notice that steady improvements were being made over the past few days though.

I just got my cocomment invite, am going to sign right up, though after leaving comments on some blogs that were using cocomment I felt (maybe imagination) that the posting time was slower then normal. Just imagination or others found the same?

Crazy Nancy, you have proven once again that you're digitally hipper than I am! I only started using coComment last week. Had to get a special invite from a cyberbuddy just to get in the door.

Keep up the great work!
