Choosing Blogging Software for Non Profits (and others)

Idealware has released their report on getting Started with Blogging Software
Our in-depth blog report is here! We reviewed and compared the seven tools most frequently used to create a blog. Which are easiest to get up and running, or to tailor to match your site? Which has the best comment moderation features? Reporting functionality? We'll give you all the details and recommend a tool for you. Read more (free registration required) >"
Once you navigate into the report (free, donations always appreciated) you will get to the intro which describes the report's purpose.
There are a number of good blogging tools, but choosing between them can be confusing. In this report, we’ll take a detailed look at the top blogging tools out there and outline key considerations for selecting a blogging platform, including the skills required to set it up; the ease with which you can post to it; whether you can upload images, video, or audio to it; its ability to moderate comments and prevent spam; how closely you can tailor its design to match the look and feel of your organization’s Web site and other collateral; and tools you can use to track who’s reading it.

The seven blogging platforms we've chosen to review here are Blogger, LiveJournal,Typepad, Movable Type, WordPress, ExpressionEngine, and TextPattern. We chose these tools because they are the ones most commonly used to create a typical nonprofit blog -- by a long shot. 77 percent of all the bloggers included in the Nonprofit Blog Exchange and 81 percent of respondents in a survey of serious bloggers conducted by ProBlogger used one of these seven tools. (For more on market share and how we picked these tools, see our Blog Market Analysis).

Regardless of what they say, the winner is WordPress and a competent adminstrator that knows some PHP. The runner up is Movable Type. We've found both to be very effective down here in New Orleans. With wordpress.com, it's pretty easy to get rolling with WordPress, and TypePad for MovableType.

Blogger is a very popular tool, because it's so easy to get going, but the Blogger sites are frought with little issues. What I like least about Blogger sites is that there is no syndicated feed for comments. Ultimately, aggregation is going to play a roll, and in a focused nonprofit weblog, the good stuff is generally found in the comments.
