Getting Ready to Throw in the Blogger Towel

My blog page has not been displaying for most of the week. Publishing times out on a regular basis, sometimes at 0%, sometimes at 80%. I have sent a help request to blogger (no response) and posted to the help group (See My blog won't publish and I've done everything advised - Something Is Broken | Google Groups). My individual postings show up - the permalinks work - but the main page http://www.fullcirc.com/weblog/onfacblog.htm shows a "page not available error."

After hearing a great session on WordPress here at Northern Voice, and having two people convince me how easy it is to port my blogger blog to Wordpress, I'm just about ready to do it. I hate to have to move, but I am sick of this problem. It has been a problem off and on since January.

This may be the nudge I need to move my blog to be main main page at http://www.fullcirc.com. So I'll also have to redirect the old feeds and URLs. I'm not looking forward to this, but I sure am ready for something easier than the PITA that the old Blogger has turned into. (Plus, I can't seem to upgrade to new Blogger because my blog is too big.)

about moving==as long as you're not making any money from your blog, WordPress is fine. But if you've got the least little commerce going on, fugeddaboutit. I'm thinking of moving out of WP because they won't support my money-making efforts.

(I don't know how to post this other than anonymously, but I'm not hiding: I'm marcys.wordpress.com

I take it that would be an installed Wordpress here on fullcirc, rather than hosted through wordpress.com in which case definitely a good move. You get to play with all the amazing worpress plugins which are constantly being made available and the comments should work better than through blogger.

It is possible that the failure to publish has nothing to do with blogger though, it may be with the hosting that fullcirc is on, in which case changing the platform might not solve it.

I switched from Drup to WP about a year ago and I'm happy with that decision. The install and customization was quite simple. The only problems were 1) all previous comments were marked as from "anonymous" and 2) all of the accents in French were replaced by strange characters. I'm assuming you won't have problem #2.

As a reader of several blogger blogs, I do not like trying to post to those blogs. Just one example, if I sign in with my google account, it does not recognize it. And I could not figure out how to do TrackBacks -- then someone told me that Blogger does not have TrackBack capability? Is that really true?

Here's a blogging software review that rates blogger highest:

Good luck with your decision.

Sorry to hear about all the problems. What a bummer to have a wonderfully huge blog that won't port over to the New Blogger. Do check the size limits of WordPress though. They are much lower than Blogger.

Stephanie West Allen asked about Blogger and trackback. You can make Blogger do nearly everything imaginable, but sometimes you have to know how to install code. This site, http://snipurl.com/1b871, has a script you can install to give trackback capability to a Blogger blog.

Trackback is not without problems. Wikipedia reports, "Many blogs have stopped using trackbacks because dealing with spam became too burdensome." Maybe this is why Blogger doesn't have it as an automatic option.

Best wishes as you work this out!

I feel your pain . . . transferring my blog to WordPress was not a one step process, so plan on a little work. I really like its functionality and they are real friendly folks.
